Check out the full interview below!
ViewHipHop: Who is Ashon? where are you from?
I’m like the average dude out here trying to make it that looks at things in life in a not so average way. I come from is New Haven CT.
ViewHipHop: With myself being also from Connecticut, many times local artists feel that they dont get the shot because this isnt NY. How do you feel about that and what are you doing to change that perspective from people?
Well I don’t look at myself as a local artist cause I don’t wanna limit myself to thinking locally. I look at myself as an independent artist and what I plan to do is just show results. People can’t debate results, I don’t care if you’re from NY,LA,Chicago wherever just show results and that’ll change anybody’s perspective.
ViewHipHop: You have recently released your new album “Its A Luxurious Struggle”, this wasnt just any regular project to you was it? This wasnt a 1 month project putting anything together to make an album. You took over two years taking your time putting “Its A Luxurious Struggle” together, why was this project so important to you?
No it wasn’t a regular album to me – this one I felt had to be perfect. I wanted this album to be my coming out as an artist, the whole world knowing who I am kinda album – I want people to be able to go back 5 years from now and still feel like this is brand new. I want them to feel like this was an experience and remember where you was when you first heard “It’s A Luxurious Struggle”. I just went about this album trying to make a little history in my own mind and to the world – so it had to be perfect.
ViewHipHop: What differences musically and as an artist were there from your last album “Liquid: The Diamond Dream” compared to “Its A Luxurious Struggle”?
I always try to grow by giving you more of myself each time – so every time I drop you’re gonna know more and more about myself and whats going on in my life. At the same time I try to grow lyrically and never approach an album the same way. This album I felt was a more direct and in your face kind of approach, more bold statements and just an all around more life feeling to it – it’s always about life and there’s different angles to it I just made sure I captured as many angles as I could on this one
ViewHipHop: Did you work with any other CT artists on “Its A Luxurious Struggle”?
Yeah I did I worked with Waxx on this as well as my other projects, Late Nite Snacks an artist out of Hartford ct and Ru Williams a talented r&b artist out of Hartford. Front Page Vll delivered a dope verse on the project, and Franchise Tha Great laid one of my favorite hooks on the album. Jake Huffman of the rock soul group The Mclovins did a phenomenal job on a song that was produced by Trackhouse V who delivered a monster track on the album. All the other great work was done by of course Athagod 888 who produced, mixed and mastered the whole album. I also had various close people to me who delivered vocals and talked thru the project as well whom I was grateful for.
ViewHipHop: You have already released visuals to “Bounce” & “The Pledge”, what else off your new album “Its A Luxurious Struggle” will you be releasing?
Right now we are choosing which song off of the album to do the next video for so it’s definitely gonna be more visuals
ViewHipHop: Whats the next project or plans we should be expecting soon from Ashon?
Definitely have more music coming very soon to hold you over before the next project – but yes there is another album coming so stay tuned and be looking for more videos.
ViewHipHop: As independent artists, are your plans to stay in the independent lane or to get signed by a major? recently we have seen many artists and producers making it on their own independently and without major backing. in which direction do yo see yourself headed?
Well I’m gonna continue to be independent and I see myself going in any lane that presents the best opportunity for the world to get my music and for me to feed my son – which one will that be I don’t know but I will be good with whatever one. I’m always gonna be good.
ViewHipHop: We like to ask all up coming artists this, do you see yourself making a XXL freshman list any year coming up? and what do you feel its going to take for yall to land on that acclaimed list?
I do see myself on that list and I think it’s gonna take hard work with a killer monster joint that get the people talking and God on your side and i feel I can cover those areas so let’s see what happens – but yes I do see myself up there.
